What is SEO?
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a key part of any online business strategy. In simple terms, SEO is about raising a website’s profile with search engines such as Google. The higher your site appears on Google’s results pages, the more traffic you’ll get.
A variety of methods are used to achieve this. The most important is copywriting – the choice of words and how they are arranged, in the body of the text and also in menus, page titles and headlines. (Some people will tell you that meta keyword tags are important. Ignore them – keyword tags haven’t been relevant to SEO for several years now.)
Another task for the SEO consultant is to ensure that search engines can find all your pages. That means looking at the coding and architecture of the site, identifying any technical problems.
Inbound links are also essential. Google became the world’s most successful search engine on the back of its PageRank system, which rates pages according to the number of sites that link to them, and their relevance and importance. Although Google’s algorithm is now infinitely more complex, PageRank still lurks at its heart.
